About the Teacher
Mr. Shumate has been a member of the intermediate school faculty at Pa'auilo School since the fall of 2014. He is national board certified in early adolescent mathematics and he currently teaches math to grades six through nine. He serves as a 9th grade advisor and also teaches ninth-grade physical education and a mixed grade level math workshop course. Mr. Shumate revived the MATHCOUNTS Competition Program at the school including a second-place finish and also sending two contenders to the state competition, but unfortunately, the future of the program on this island became uncertain after 2020. However, Mr. Shumate was able to again enter students into the competition in 2023 and took the group of four students to the state competition.
