School and afterschool programs will be open 9/11/18

Afterschool activities to resume for Hawaii Island on Sept. 11, schools statewide to remain open except Hana High & Elementary

Due to the latest forecast of Tropical Storm Olivia, the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) will resume afterschool activities on Hawaii Island tomorrow, Sept. 11. In Maui County, all afterschool activities will remain canceled for tomorrow and Hana High & Elementary will be closed.

All other schools statewide will be open tomorrow.

If Maui County officials activate evacuation shelters at Maui County campuses, those schools will need to be closed to allow emergency management agencies to stand up shelters. Please check Maui County’s website for shelter information.

As the situation evolves, HIDOE will continue to provide updates about cancellations and closures on ourwebsite and social media —Twitter and Facebook. If you have further questions about whether or not your school or office will be open, please contact your principal or supervisor.

Olivia continues to make its way west at a rate of 10 mph. A continued west to west-southwest motion is expected over the next few days. On the forecast track, Olivia will be moving over the main Hawaiian Islands late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Gradual weakening is forecast over the next 48 hours, but Olivia is expected to remain a powerful Tropical Storm as it moves across the islands and could bring damaging wind, rains, flooding and surf.
